How do I take care of my new tattoo?

While each artists may have their own recommendation for healing your new tattoo, the general guidelines will be the same. The common product used is called Recovery Derm Shield. The manufacturer describes the product as such, “Effortlessly protect your new tattoos with Recovery Derm Shield, a latex-free, transparent matte film adhesive bandage. Derm Shield offers maximum breathability and flexibility, providing optimal conditions for flawless, gentle healing and skin renewal. It eliminates scabbing and reduces the risk of scarring, while preventing exposure to bacteria, dirt, and abrasion. Derm Shield is waterproof, but permeable to allow skin perspiration. “

Using Derm Shield removes a lot of work needed to heal your tattoo. You will leave this bandage on for 2-3 days and take it off in the shower. Day 1-3: Wash your tattoo with an Unscented/Anti-bacterial soap twice a day and leave it alone. Day 4-14: continue to wash your tattoo twice a day. Then use a non-scented lotion or shea butter to moisturize after washing your tattoo for at least two weeks. You will notice build up of plasma underneath the bandage, this is normal and part of the healing process. If your bandage leaks or rolls up; remove immediately. For any other questions about the healing process, consult your artist.
